I've stumbled onto my latest favorite time-vacuum. The Book Cover Archive edited and maintained by Ben Pieratt and Eric Jacobsen.I'm struck by these three covers in particular. The top and bottom images are completely arresting. And the image in the middle, the Updike book, might be minimalist perfection.

on the whole, though, i think my favorite publisher in terms of covers is new directions, it's like they never left 1962.
